Richard is a Chef, Restaurateur & Food stylist. With his creative talents and training he is making waves in the restaurant/catering world of Helsinki. He has lived, worked & traveled to Asia, the USA, Denmark, Spain, Japan, Russia, London, Scandinavia & Morocco, and his food reflects this in a fusion of taste, texture & color.
Richard was 4 years old when he moved with his teacher/missionary parents from Sweden to the Caribbean. By his teenage years, he had already lived & visited numerous countries in Southeast Asia & the Orient. Growing up in exotic regions of the world & experiencing local cuisines, greatly influenced his culinary tastes and helped develop a strong base for his future love of global street food.
As a 16-year-old teenager, he was already running his first kitchen in Denmark; Spain, Japan, Russia, London and Scandinavia followed. After having studied to be an apprentice chef in Denmark & completing culinary school in Helsinki, he continued his training at the prestigious Ian Schrager hotels in London and soon after, was executive chef at Norways, Sogn og Fjordane Resort Hotel in Skei.
Richard is now based in Finland and has brought all his knowledge to the Helsinki restaurant world. He is known for having run kitchens like New York Ninja, Siltanen, Nolla, Shanghai Cowboy, Tokyo Girl and now Sandro in Kallio, Eira & Kamppi. Sandro was chosen the best new restaurant of the year by Helsingin Sanomat Nyt-liite (11/2013) & in 2014, won three categories in City-Lehti’s vote for best restaurant in Helsinki: Best Restaurant, Best Ethnic Restaurant and Best Brunch. His avant-garde culinary concepts have proven successful in several pop-up restaurants, catering events, electronic music festivals & Food Truck.
The creative talents he has cultivated over the years have assisted in developing his boutique catering company Richard McCormick’s Catering, which has provided excellent service for such clients as Finlandia Vodka, Amcham, Hartwall, World Design Capital, & for numerous design agencies, embassies, weddings & parties.
In March 2015, Richard McCormick & Ville Relander opened the doors to a popular new family-style Eatery, Rotisserie and Bar, The Cock. In May of 2016, Richard McCormick & Ville Relander opened ‘Holiday’ an exciting new bar, kitchen & terrace in Katajanokka, Helsinki. Holiday bustles with energy, offering fresh seafood, exotic drinks, a holiday mood and a large sun terrace.
